The inaugural Training Design Festival took place on 13th January 2023 to allow VIP members and guests to work together for a full day of creativity and collaboration.
And what a day it was!
30 L&D professionals working together for a whole day to learn from each other, share ideas, pick up new tips and help each other out.
We began the day with a brilliant Wild Tea run by Leanne- to introduce one our favourite set of tools and techniques – Liberating Structures.
This was followed by a (shortened) Lunch n Learn session on the Return on Training Investment where we explored some of the ways to calculate ROI, but also what we might be better off doing instead.
You can watch the recording of the rehearsal here (no technical glitches!)
Here’s a copy of the Jamboards that were created in that session.
Then it was into an Explore Session, using the Transform Deck by Untold Play to find new ways of covering content and making it more engaging. It’s fair to say that this was an incredibly powerful session with so many people gaining many ideas in a very short space of time.

Then we moved into 3 groups for our Designer’s Drop-Ins where anyone could ask anything of the group! Some people needed new exercises. Others were seeking guidance on content. Others explored new apps, whilst others just wanted to run their ideas by someone else – whatever the challenge, it was met with the full force of the community.
Thank you to Eleanor, Michelle and Annette for managing the discussions. We didn’t record the session, but here’s a summary of what happening in each group.

Finally, our Round Table events saw us discussing Change Management, Communication Skills and How to get Buy-In for Training. So many ideas shared again, including models and theories that were new to some and practical ideas that could be implemented.
Here’s what we discussed in the Getting Buy-In Group… Don’t panic – the video works!
Kris hosted a discussion all about Change Management Training…
Andonella hosted a discussion all about Communication Skills Training…
It was such a success, that I think it only right that we make it a bi-annual event!
Watch out for the next one happening in the summer.
