A twist on the classic Desert Survival Exercise. Useful for exploring communication, decision making and teamwork.
Here’s how to run it…
Part 1 – Individual decision Distribute the scenario to each delegate and give them 5 minutes to decide how they would rank the items in terms of importance to their survival. Part 2 – Small groups Ask delegates to work in groups of 3 or 4 to reach a decision about the ranking. Allow 10-15 minutes. Part 3 – Full group Now ask delegates to agree a ranking in full group. Allow 15 minutes. Debrief: How confident did you feel about your decisions in each round? – Probably felt most confident in second round. How did you feel about your contribution in each round? – Again probably felt best in the small group as everyone could be heard. How did you make sure that everyone contributed? How effective were you in each round? – Chances are they didn’t finish when debating as full group. Implications for deadlines etc. Then, distribute the expert ranking, and ask delegates to compare their own answer, the small group answer and the full group answer (if they have one) to it. Which was closest? What does that tell us about group decision making? |
